“I knew she’d manage somehow” she hissed, “Wasn’t excepting she’d manage this way, though” Mai paused, eyeing Geming even more severely, “You better keep that mouth of yours shut” she threatened, sliding one of her blades to her hand.
And what do I care? Mai thought to herself, sighing and looking from head to toe to the little stranger before her, how did he even manage to get inside her room?
“Is Toph the one saying I’m her lover?” she asked, standing up, “Because I am married” damn Toph couldn’t keep her stupid mouth shut for once.

“I bet you two did” she whispered, rolling her eyes.
“I’m never happy” she stated as if it were the most obvious thing on earth.
Sokka sighed and sat up. “Well, Can I change that? I like when you smile, even if it’s fake. So come on, Let’s go do something fun. Or you can teach me how to use those knives.” He said with a smile, rising up and holding out his hand.
“Would have never taken you as a knife thrower, getting bored of that old sword, warrior?” Mai asked teasingly.
Katara knitted her fingers together and pressed them tight to her belly, where tiny moths fluttered in a nervous dance. She hadn’t seen her Fire Nation friends in months—what if they no longer got along? What if the fragile friendships she’d built with Zuko and Ty Lee had crumbled?
What if Mai still disliked her?
Katara chewed her lower lip hard enough to draw blood as the guard ushered her through the gates of the Fire Nation’s looming palace, into the court yard. She readjusted her travelling satchel and pushed through the heavy doors, into the palace.
“Excuse me, Miss” Mai heard one of the palace guards call her from the entrance of her sitting room, she looked up her scroll for courtesy, completely uninterested on what the young man had to say to her. He was nervous, she could tell. Taking the cup of jasmine tea resting on the table next to her, she made a gesture with her hand indicating the shaky man he could continue.
“Miss Katara from the Southern Water Tribe has arrived” he said shyly, bowing his head deeply.
With another hand gesture she indicated him to leave, and almost lazily she stood up from her cushion and fixed her robes.
Mai sighed, she knew it was going to be a long week.
“Specially from you, Toph” she said taking a quiet sip out of her cup.
Mai could feel the hurt in Toph’s words but she knew she had to be honest to her, despite the fact that it might hurt her, she needed her to know how she was feeling, for the first time, “I’m sick of this, of you, of Zuko, of myself” she said, a little more loudly this time, she placed the cup on the table and turned to Toph, sitting next to her and letting her hand rest on the side of her neck, “I didn’t know if I could continue doing this to all of us”
“…I thought you were okay with anything… As long as you were with me.” Toph muttered quietly before putting the tea cup down. She exhaled slowly, trying to calm the rage building up inside of her.
“I love you, Mai.”
Toph stated plainly, before she set the cup down and stood up.
“And I thought you felt the same…”
“I do, and I thought you’d understand, but you clearly can’t think beyond your own selfish reasons” she said harshly, standing up too.
